A transesophageal echocardiogram (or TEE) is performed because the esophagus lies directly behind the heart. Since the heart and esophagus are so close together, we can place an ultrasound probe into the esophagus to obtain excellent images of the heart.

A TEE allows us to closely examine the inside of the heart, including the heart valves and the heart’s overall function. It provides your cardiologist with valuable information that often cannot be obtained through other imaging tests.

A transesophageal echocardiogram is a safe procedure. It is performed under heavy sedation, so it is generally not uncomfortable. If your doctor recommends a TEE, it is usually because the test can provide important information about your heart.
