ACS Q&A with Dr. Trey Baucum – What Are Varicose Veins?
A lot of people have varicose veins. Varicose veins are enlarged veins in the legs.
There are several risk factors for varicose veins. The first is genetics. If your parents have varicose veins, you have a higher risk of developing them as well. Other risk factors include standing for long periods of time, pregnancy, being overweight and certain jobs that require you to be on your feet.
Varicose veins can also be a health risk. They can cause swelling in the legs, fatigue, heaviness and restless legs.
There are excellent treatment options available for people with varicose veins. If your legs are swelling and if you have enlarged veins, discoloration or leg fatigue at the end of the day, you should probably see your cardiologist.
A simple screening test can determine whether you have chronic venous reflux disease, which can put you at risk for varicose veins.
