ACS Q&A with Dr. Bill Haynie – What Is Coronary Artery Disease?

Coronary Heart Disease, also known Atherosclerosis, involves a thickening of the artery and plaque buildup that narrows the coronary arteries, decreasing blood flow to the heart muscle. Significant obstruction of blood flow may result in chest discomfort and shortness of breath with exertion, or other artery disease symptoms. It may also put the patient at risk for heart attack. At ACS, we offer the highest quality Coronary Artery Disease treatment. Call us today at (318) 798-9400 to make an appointment.

Coronary artery disease is caused by a condition called atherosclerosis, which affects the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle. It begins with thickening of the artery walls. This eventually leads to the buildup of plaque, causing significant narrowing that restricts blood flow.

When blood flow to the heart is substantially reduced, patients may experience chest discomfort or shortness of breath during physical activity.

Coronary artery disease also increases the risk of a myocardial infarction, more commonly known as a heart attack. A heart attack occurs when the lining over plaque ruptures, exposing the material beneath it to the bloodstream. This causes a blood clot to form, which can completely block the artery.
