ACS Q&A – Dr. Osman: How Do You Treat Peripheral Artery Disease?

Today, we have many treatment options for peripheral artery disease. During the early stages, we focus on medical therapy by working with patients to manage the underlying risk factors (including diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol).

We also offer supervised exercise programs, which can help patients manage the pain associated with peripheral artery disease.

If these treatments are not enough, we have more advanced treatment options. We can locate the blockage and treat it by using a balloon to open the artery or by placing a stent to restore blood flow.

I always tell my patients that if they are experiencing leg cramping or have wounds that are not healing, they should seek medical attention because there are many effective treatment options available.
