ACS Q&A – Dr. Osman: How Are Varicose Veins Treated?

Varicose veins can be treated in several different ways. During the early stages, we usually begin with conservative treatment. This includes recommendations to avoid prolonged standing and using compression stockings to help reduce symptoms caused by varicose veins.

In more advanced cases when varicose veins are causing significant pain or itching (or are associated with wounds), more advanced treatment may be recommended.

One option is vein ablation, which can be performed using a laser. Another option is a medical adhesive (or glue), which is used to close the feeder veins. We can also use sclerotherapy to treat and close the affected veins.

All of these treatment methods have been used safely and effectively to help treat patients with varicose veins.
