ACS Q&A With Dr. Reeves – What is TAVR and Who Is Eligible to Receive It?
TAVR is an acronym for transcatheter aortic valve replacement. It is a procedure used to treat a heart valve condition called aortic stenosis.
During a TAVR procedure, a new heart valve is delivered through an artery in the leg and positioned inside the existing valve. Once it’s in place, the new valve immediately begins functioning.
TAVR is a less invasive alternative to traditional open-heart surgery, which requires an incision through the sternum to replace the heart valve. For many older or more frail patients, this catheter-based approach is a safe and effective treatment option.
