ACS Q&A with Dr. Bill Haynie – Does Drinking Red Wine Affect Heart Health?
Moderate drinking has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, although whether red wine is significantly better than any other type of alcohol,
is less clear. If you have questions or concerns about heart disease or lifestyle choices for optimal heart health, give us a call at (318) 798-9400 to

Some people believe that red wine offers more protection against cardiovascular disease than beer or other types of alcohol. It is clear that drinking alcohol in moderation (generally defined as about one drink per day) is associated with a lower long-term risk of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular-related death.
Whether red wine is significantly more beneficial than other types of alcohol is less clear. Much of this idea comes from observations of the French population, which traditionally consumes a lot of red wine. They experience lower rates of cardiovascular disease, despite having higher rates of smoking and diets that include more saturated fats.
