Jimmy Smith, MD, Advanced Cardiovascular Specialists:
The main symptoms of heart failure are shortness of breath, tiredness, swelling and fatigue. That’s really the majority of the symptoms. People with heart failure can’t lay flat. They’ll find themselves having to prop their head up and put more pillows under the head to be able to breathe more comfortably. If someone starts getting to where they’re more out of breath at night, have to sleep with their head elevated or just frankly say, “You know what? I don’t sleep well in a bed anymore. I need to go to the recliner, so I can have my head up. That’s often a sign of heart failure. Not always. There are other things that’ll do that. Often, that’s a sign of heart failure. Those are the people that need to come to us.
