ACS Q&A – Dr. Osman: What Is Peripheral Artery Disease?

Cardiologist Dr. Mohammed Osman with Advanced Cardiovascular Specialists (ACS) explains peripheral artery disease (PAD), its risk factors, and how it impacts circulation and overall vascular health.

We get asked a lot about peripheral artery disease. Peripheral artery disease is a medical condition in which (over the years) plaque will build up within the arteries. The most common sites are the arteries affecting the legs, but they can deposit anywhere. They can affect the arteries supplying the brain, arteries supplying the arms and of course arteries supplying the heart. When the plaque deposits in the arteries supplying the legs, that can lead to significant symptoms. Patients usually present with pain or cramping when they walk. If left untreated, it can cause significant pain even at rest. That can eventually lead to some wounds, which would resist healing without treatment.
