ACS Q&A with Dr. Bill Haynie – What Is a Stent?

A stent is a small tube that is inserted into a blocked artery to restore blood flow. A wire mesh tube mounted onto a deflated balloon is passed into the artery, then the balloon is inflated to push back plaque in an area of obstruction, with the stent acting as scaffolding within the artery to hold the plaque back indefinitely. Stent technology has increased dramatically since they were introduced over 20 years ago. In general they are quite safe with rare complications. ACS offers stent procedures using the latest technology. Call us today at (318) 798-9400 to make an appointment.
